ARTIST OF THE MONTH: JAY-R AND HIS JOURNEY OF BECOMING PHILIPPINES’ KING OF R&B
Known as the “Philippines’ King of R&B”, Jay-R was born
and raised in Los Angeles, California. Before he became known
in the Philippine music industry, he started his career along
with Jimmy Muna and Kris Lawrence with a group
called First Impressions back in 1997, as well as
his uncle Bobby Silona’s band, The Howlers in the U.S.
His big break as an R&B artist was when he was offered
a record deal with Universal Records, and a network deal
from GMA TV Network in 2003. On the same year, his debut album,
Gameface earned a Platinum status
by Philippine Association of the Record Industry (PARI).
His songs “Design for Luv” and “Bakit Pa Ba?” from the said album
invaded the radios and music channels nationwide.
A year after, he starred in his debut film, "So Happy Together"
alongside Kris Aquino, then more films and TV shows followed since then.
Because of the success of his first album, he became
an in-demand endorser of various brands such as Bench, Sun Cellular,
Unisilver, Colgate, Tropicana, Technomarine, and Kaspersky.
In 2006, he opened his own record label, JayRs Music.
Under JayRs Music, he recorded his first Christmas album
initially called "Christmas Away From Home" but eventually
changed to "Holiday of Love" on its final release.
In 2009, he made up his mind and focused working on his
independent record label, and renamed it Homeworkz Entertainment Services.
Signed under this label are Hip-Hop/R&B artists Q-York and Chelo A,
Alternative Rock band Kley, and Rap/Hip-Hop artists Salbakuta,
and a Singer/Dancer/Model, Mica Javier to name a few.
Aside from his career in the entertainment industry,
Jay-R is a Bar/Restaurant owner of TreeHouse in Makati.
Jay-R is definitely an inspiration; a well-deserved title “Philippines’ King of R&B”.
