At first glance, one might not recognize Austin Richard Post, better known as Post Malone, as a hip-hop artist; he is, nonetheless, and in just one year, the scraggly-bearded 22-year-old who chooses to go by his moniker has gone from unknown college dropout to the Caucasian Allen Iverson of the hip-hop world.
Malone never really had a penchant for music until playing Guitar
Hero influenced him to pick up the guitar back in 2009, at the age of 16, after achieving 5-star ratings on every track in the game. It was the same year that he taught himself to play guitar via YouTube tutorial videos, as well as joining a hardcore band. Though he enrolled in a community college in Texas, he soon dropped out in favor of moving to Los Angeles in pursuit of a music career.
After signing with Republic Records, the eccentric artist transformed into an industry superstar with just one studio album to his name. Malone released his debut offering, Stoney
, in 2016, but achieved notoriety with the viral “White Iverson” in February the year before. It is said that he wrote the song in his Los Angeles bedroom at a time when he couldn’t get himself even a pack of cigarettes. He did, say, however, that he never intended to release the song until it leaked, but this would prove to be a good move, with its visual currently boasting over 432 million views on YouTube, and still counting. Furthermore, his ode to NBA legend Allen Iverson peaked at No. 14 on the Billboard Hot 100
Due to his success his music brought him, Malone was nominated for New Artist of the Year in the 2017 American Music Awards, as well as Best New International Artist in the iHeartRadio Much Music Video Awards in Canada, and for Best Hip-Hop artist.in the 2017 MTV Europe Music Awards.
