THE WEEKND RELEASES “HE WAS NEVER THERE” SHORT DOCUMENTARY

After dropping two vertical videos last month, The Weeknd unleashes a grainy clip for “He Was Never There” off My Dear Melancholy, his chart-topping six-song EP. Not exactly a music video, it plays out like a mini-documentary.

An experimental short documentary that goes behind the scenes of making My Dear Melancholy,.

The six-minute clip features footage from the recording sessions, plus audio clips from interviews with those involved, offering a deeper look at “the emotion in the world of The Weeknd. It showcases different takes, conversations, and pensive moments in the lab.

A voice narrates different parts of the clip. He explains how the project came together in “a month-and-a-half” and how it’s all about “cultivating” Abel’s thoughts.

Think of the film as a mood board, capturing the horror-movie VHS dread that inspires Tesfaye's general sonic outlook. It's brief and inventively shot. Take a look at it:
