After dropping two vertical videos last month, The Weeknd unleashes a grainy clip for “He Was Never There” off My Dear Melancholy, his chart-topping six-song EP. Not exactly a music video, it plays out like a mini-documentary.

The six-minute clip features footage from the recording sessions, plus audio clips from interviews with those involved, offering a deeper look at “the emotion in the world of The Weeknd. It showcases different takes, conversations, and pensive moments in the lab.
A voice narrates different parts of the clip. He explains how the project came together in “a month-and-a-half” and how it’s all about “cultivating” Abel’s thoughts.
